Benefits of Multimodal Pain Management

Benefits of Multimodal Pain Management

Multimodal pain management may not be a term that everyone is familiar with; it means utilizing different types of analgesic drugs as pain management to ensure that patients experience as little pain as necessary post-surgery. The benefits of a multimodal pain management approach recognize the complexity of the individual experiencing pain, their psychology, and physiology. Optimizing a holistic approach to pain management can ensure a quick recovery with minimal discomfort.

Typically the medications used to treat pain post-surgery are associated with side effects that impair mobility, memory, and energy levels—utilizing a multimodal pain management system, the medicines are combined to retain analgesic effects while minimizing side effects.

Using a combination of different analgesics benefits the patient in two main ways. The most obvious is that pain is alleviated, making the patient feel better. When a combination of analgesics gets taken, the patient can take less of a particular medication, minimizing side effects and increasing healing time.

Using parenteral opioids or epidural analgesia can hinder early rehabilitation and recovery. Infiltration of an analgesic cocktail locally can help avoid these side effects while speading up recovery times.

Book an appointment with DiPaolo Orthopedics to discuss a post-surgical multimodal pain management protocol in-depth and how that might benefit you.
